A Silent Killer – Sleep Apnea
Anything that makes heart disease and dementia BOTH worse is a bad thing. Sleep apnea hurts the heart and the mind – in addition to causing daytime sleepiness that makes you a danger to yourself and others when you drive. Not getting enough sleep is also linked to anger management issues, negativity and depression, elevated stress and even ADHD. Ignoring sleep apnea is a dangerous choice.
Sleep apnea is normally treated with a CPAP, an oral sleep appliance or a combination of the two.
Tired of Your CPAP?
CPAP’s are a wonderful treatment for sleep apnea and sleep breathing disorders, but they aren’t a great fit for everyone’s lifestyle and personality. If you don’t tolerate a CPAP, can’t get used to it or just hate it, an oral sleep appliance may be the solution for you.
Oral Sleep Appliance – What’s That?
An oral sleep appliance is like an orthodontic retainer or nightguard that fits over the upper and lower teeth and gently advances the lower jaw forward. How does that help? Well, moving the jaw forward opens up the airway and allowing easier breathing and stopping snoring. It’s a small change, but it works wonders.
Not Sure If You Have Sleep Apnea?
If you suspect that you have sleep apnea, but aren’t sure, there are several things you can do. First take the Epworth Daytime Sleepiness Evaluation (click here). This simple questionnaire tells you if you likely have sleep disordered breathing or not. Second, come on in for a consultation. We are partnered with a sleep physician here in San Antonio and can help you get started on the road to a good night’s sleep!
