My Teeth Catch Food
Do your teeth catch food?
Isn’t it embarrassing to realize that you’ve had leftovers from lunch stuck between your teeth and that everyone else noticed it before you did?!? Raspberry seeds, chia seeds, poppy seeds, lettuce – they are the worst!
Everyone gets food caught between their teeth occasionally, but for some people, it happens constantly! Besides being embarrassing, regularly catching food in your teeth increases your risk of gum disease, cavities and intensely bad breath.
Why Me? Why My Mouth?
If you’re frequently catching food in the same areas of your mouth, it means that you have microspaces (tiny extra spaces) in between your teeth. This happens for one of two reasons. Microspaces can be created naturally when teeth come in crookedly or don’t fit well together. Small spaces can also be created artificially by orthodontic treatment or by an odd shaped restoration (filling or crown). Sometimes, teeth move naturally away from each other, especially in the very back of the mouth.
No More Leftovers
If you’re sick of the food packing, you’re left with a couple of options.
- Floss after every meal and snack. We can recommend the flosses that suit your teeth best if you want to take this route.
- Reduce any microspaces so that they no longer pack food. This can be done by replacing poorly shaped restorations that are packing food, by orthodontics or by re-contouring teeth that create microspaces to allow for flossing without food packing.
