GUM PROBLEMS

Gum Infections, Abscesses and Pus

Wake up swollen or with pus oozing from your gums?

Sometimes an infection in the gums will suddenly get worse, leaving us with a swollen face or a hard swollen bubble in the gums and oozing white or yellow pus. Understandably, these abscesses are the types of dental emergencies that most patients dread because of the pain and inconvenience. What many people don’t realize is that any infection under the gums is not just a pain. Any infection under the gums is also actively destroying tooth-supporting bone. Loss of bone is a problem because it leads to loss of teeth.

Make it stop!

If you have an abscess, the first thing to do is see a dentist to treat the infection. Treating the infection also typically relieves the pain. Depending on the size and type of infection, you may need antibiotics and/or a specialized cleaning or root canal therapy to treat the infection. If the infection has damaged too much bone, it may also be necessary to perform additional services to either graft new bone, remove more bone to make the area cleansable, or even remove the tooth in the area of the infection in order for the bone to heal properly.

Where did the abscess come from?

Once the abscess infection is being treated and you are out of pain, it is important to try to figure out what caused the infection. In most if not all cases, your abscess was caused by the bad bacteria in your mouth. If you have moderate infection throughout your gums, then only treating the one abscess infection is not going to solve the problem. You will need to remove the bacteria from around other teeth to prevent future abscesses around other teeth. If the abscess was caused by bacteria which got inside a tooth (a endodontic abscess), then a careful evaluation of other teeth for cavities is also in order to prevent other teeth from getting bacteria inside them. Additional abscesses will continue to occur until the bacteria are not allowed to find residence on and inside your teeth.
