Toothaches are TERRIBLE!
Tooth pain can be one of the most intense forms of misery, can’t they? No one would ever endure a toothache by choice… Or Would They???
The Main Culprit? Cavities!
What’s the #1 cause of toothaches? Cavities. When cavities go deep into a tooth, they affect the tooth nerve and cause PAIN.
Here’s the thing… Deep cavities ARE preventable. No one wants a toothache, but not everyone realizes that they can prevent 99% of toothaches with regular dental visits that catch cavities while they’re small.
What Else Causes Toothaches?
- Well, cracked teeth for one. Teeth crack for lots of reasons: bite imbalance, chewing hard stuff like ice, grinding and clenching. Cavities and cracked teeth both cause sharp, shooting pains versus the intense throbb caused by gum infections.
- Toothaches also happen from abscesses and gum infections that cause intense pressure and throbbing pain.
- Guess what else makes our teeth hurt? Sinus infections! If your teeth ache and you have sinus congestion or tenderness around your sinuses, then sinusitis may be causing your toothaches.
- Your toothache could also be a jaw problem. Jaw issues (TMD) can make the jaw, muscles and teeth hurt terribly.
The Danger of a Toothache that Stops Hurting
What!?! How could it be a bad thing for a toothache to stop hurting?!?
If the toothache was caused by a sinus infection, then it’s a really good thing, not a bad thing.
BUT… if the toothache was caused by a cavity or cracked tooth and it stops hurting, it’s bad. It means that the tooth’s nerve has been overwhelmed by the infection and died. The nerve may be dead, but the infection is very much alive. Such a deeply infected tooth is “rotten to the core.”
This infection damages the jaw bone and neighboring teeth and can even enter the bloodstream spreading infection throughout the body. These infected teeth are dangerous.
Fixing the Tooth and the Ache
Permanently fixing a toothache means treating the underlying problem as well as the pain.
Effectively treating an infected toothache has two steps:
Step #1: Treat the ache beginning with antibiotics to kill the infection.
Step #2: Repair tooth damage.
If jaw problems are involved, we start with a bite analysis and facial muscle exam instead. Fix the ache. Fix the root problem. End the Ache!
